What’s On Your Roof?

Moss

Thick, spongy consistency; dark green in color

Note: Because these organisms hold and absorb water, they can cause premature deterioration leading to roof failure.

Algae

Streaks that run up and down your roof; black or unsightly green in color

Note: Feeds on limestone filler in asphalt shingles.

Lichen

Greenish white in color

Note: Known for breaking down roof shingles prematurely by releasing acids.

Benefits Of Routinely Having Your Roof Cleaned

Those unsightly dark stains are more than just decreasing the beauty of your Suffolk County home or business, but affecting the functionality of your roof as well.

Badly stained roofs riddled with moss and lichen inhibit your roof’s ability to properly reflect heat, which can drive your cooling costs up in the summer months.

Another great advantage of roof cleaning that is often overlooked is the health benefits. By removing the mold off of your roof, there is a lower risk of allergies, constant colds, or respiratory problems among your family and loved ones staying in your home.

Long Island insurance companies are mandating that all roofs are to be regularly maintained to remain complaint. By using our service, you’ll avoid fines or even a policy cancellation and mitigate homeowner’s insurance audit issues. At Squeaky Clean, we understand the necessary procedures to satisfy your policy’s requirements including proper documentation and before and after photographs.

Our Roof Cleaning Process

Before we step foot on any roof, we do a full inspection of the roof. We take note of any problem areas and photograph them. We also note what type of material is on the roof, the approximate age, and how much life that roof has left.

Squeaky Clean applies an eco-friendly cleaning solution under 100 PSI (less pressure than a typical rainstorm) to ensure your roof is never damaged. We apply a proprietary mix of algaecides, surfactants, and mildewcides to the roof that is highly effective, but safe for the environment, your family, vegetation, and pets. We then complete our process with a low-pressure, high-volume rinse to make sure the cleaning solutions and leftover debris are thoroughly removed.

Note: Our process is approved by Owens CorningGAF, and ARMA and will not void any roof manufacturers’ warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my roof have black stains?

Gloeocapsa Magma is the primary species of algae causing your roof to have black streaks. These algae spores are carried by the wind and land on your roof. Precipitation causes the algae to spread in a streak-like pattern and spread all over your roof. As the algae grows, it will spread to adjacent homes which is why you will see it on many roofs in the same area. Unfortunately, this type of algae feeds off the organic material in your shingles. If the algae is left untreated, your roof may require costly, premature replacement.

What will happen if I let the algae stay on my roof?

Keeping the algae on the roof is far worse than cosmetic if left untreated. In fact, roof mold and algae will cause decay by holding moisture. Your shingles will start to curl up causing the underlying liner to be exposed. The liner will then start to deteriorate. Since the liner acts as a protective barrier between the wood portion of a roof and the elements, you will experience leaking and structural damage that can triple the cost of repair.

Do you pressure wash the roof?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Roof Power Washing will take years off your roof due to granule loss. Powerwashing the roof causes leaks from high pressure going under the shingles. Additionally, powerwashing does not actually kill the algae; therefore, it is possible that it will grow back in less than six months!

What is the procedure to remove the unsightly roof stains?

We use a soft wash method, which is the safest and most effective cleaning process in the industry. In fact, our process is approved by all asphalt manufacturing companies. We use a foam process that kills and prevents new algae spores from emerging as well as killing pre-existing mold/algae growth. This procedure will brighten your roof to its original luster and save years on premature roof replacement.

Thinking Of Selling Your Home?

A badly stained roof and dirty house can raise suspicion that the property may have been neglected. Taking the opportunity to invest in roof cleaning before putting your home on the market will ensure a positive first impression to potential home buyers, real- estate agents and home inspectors while adding thousands to the value of your home.
